Saturday Is Always Cheatday! covid-19: day 30 | US: GA | info | act

Saturdays have been special for a while. For almost a decade, they have been cheat days—a day where I eat or drink anything I want and not worry about it. We often make pizza, and I like to sip a little bourbon. Today was no exception.

I purchased my first bottled-in-bond bourbon: Henry McKenna 10-year, single-barrel. I kind of went into this purchase blind, as my local purveyor of fine spirits didn’t have any of the ones I wanted to try. He recommended the McKenna, so I went for it, even though it was $59. It’s probably the most I’ve ever spent for a bottle, so I was hoping I dun good. Some of the posts on r/Bourbon find it good, but overrated and overpriced—like this one, this one, and this one—but whatever. I might have overpaid, but at least it’ll be good.

It is. I’m used to drinking lower-proof bourbons, and this one is definitely stronger—particularly the aftertaste, which I found a bit spicy and lingering. It’s not unpleasant, but took me a minute to get used to it. I need to pay closer attention to how it tastes next time. Sorry this is not too informative—I think I was more interested in getting a good photo of the bottle. I think I did.

Since it was a beautiful day, and tomorrow is supposed to be stormy, we had an early Easter egg hunt for Henry. He was pretty thrilled and very appreciative. While cracking open his eggs, he kept saying “I love you guys. This is the best Easter ever.”

As this was indeed Saturday, we ended the day with pizza. I decided to try to grill it, and while I managed to crank the BGE up to 700°, the crust came out underdone. Poo. It was good, but not what you want for pizza. I just don’t think I’m a fan of grilled pizza. I much prefer my Baking Steel.

Here are my before and after shots. Pepperoni and onion.
