Checking out Ghost

So, I wanted to try something new. I have had lucaspix.com parked for a time, and I thought it was time to do something with it. I’ve been using a gallery for a little while, which I will continue to do, but I wanted a portfolio-type design to feature specific content—maybe a place to do at least a photo-of-the-day type thing. Not only could this feature my photography for a future side business if I so chose, but it could be a good replacement for Instagram, as that platform grows increasingly difficult to frustrating.[1] And let’s face it: Mediawiki is not the best choice for featuring photography.

Enter Ghost. Ghost is a CMS that has several minimalist themes, so right out of the box, it’s usable. I spun up a new server, installed Ubuntu, and I had an instance of Ghost running in a short while. There was some fiddling I had to do to get it working behind my reverse proxy with SSL, but I figured it out. So, without further ado, check the new LucasPix.

I’ve posted some old stuff on there, but I should probably work backwards. My current theme, Edge, is pretty damn good as-is. Of course, as I learn more about Ghost, stuff will change, but I’ll probably just take a little time to post some photography before doing any real tweaking. So far, I like the Ghost administration interface and editing tools. Again, minimalist and clean—it is a platform I like using, unlike the clunky mess Wordpress has become lately. It was a bit trickier to install than Wordpress, but fairly straightforward. I’ll likely have more to say about it as I gain experience.

I need to figure out how LucasPix site relates to this one. I need to be careful: one of the reasons I have this site was to consolidate all of my stuff into one place. That said, Ghost has a great theme for a professional site, so grlucas.com and/or digitalprof.pro might get the Ghost treatment.

Our water heater died yesterday. Oh, goody. The joys of home-ownership. I think the tank is leaking, as the tray is now constantly half-full, even though I turned off the water to the heater. Well, we have someone coming to check it out on Monday, but I’m pretty sure the heater is hosed.

  1. Why does this happen to every social platform I like? Flickr, I’m looking at you.
