06/04–06/10: Evaluating Wikipedia
Goals:

This week, Carroll discusses strategies for writing scannable text and visual style, including the use of headlines, subheads, lists, and links. Carroll and Göke get you thinking about the editing process and the appropriate voice for writing for the screen. A necessary part of voice is adopting a neutral point of view (NPOV) when writing on Wikipedia. Your training addresses evaluating Wikipedia articles and making your first edits. Remember to use your forum posts to practice your developing writdm skills. You should be learning new ones every week.
Read
- Carroll, chapters 3 (“Tools and Techniques”) and 4 (“Voice and Visual Style”).
- Niklas Göke, “How to Edit Your Writing in Three Passes.”[1]
- NPOV Tutorial will help you begin thinking about writing impartially.
Do
- Reminder: Did you verify your Wikipedia account by confirming your email address? Did you complete the Discourse tutorial and fill out your profile?
- Training: Evaluating Articles and Sources[2] and How to edit: Wikicode vs Visual Editor.
- Forum Discussion: Thinking about sources and plagiarism.
Write
- Evaluate a Wikipedia article. Go through the exercise on WikiEdu, and leave a paragraph summary of your lengthier evaluation on the article’s talk page. Be sure you select the article you’re evaluating on WikiEdu.[3]
- Comment on at least one other classmate’s evaluation. Find links to evaluated articles on the course dashboard on Wikipedia under “Reviewing.” These comments should be made on the evaluation on the reviewed article’s talk page.
