Access Forum Welcome to the new student forum.

See your syllabus for specifics about using the forum for your class. As of spring 2025, some classes will still use Packback, but this semester will begin the switch to Discourse, the new forum software. Follow the general directions below for registering and setting up your account. Check your syllabus for any additional instructions.

Fig. 1: When you first login.

Sign up for an account by visiting the forum and clicking signup, in the upper-right. You may use any email address and username you prefer. Be sure you choose the correct class and semester, so I can identify you and add you to the proper group. This last part is important, as the site privacy policy will not allow you to see any content posted for specific classes. Until you are added to your course group, you will only be able to see general content.

note: Only three accounts can be made at a time on campus. If you get an error about your IP address, just try again when you are off-campus.

When you confirm and activate your account, I must approve it, which I will do as soon as possible. This is to keep our community private and safe. Once approved, you will receive an email notification.[1] You might follow and read the links it contains before logging in.

note: Please use a computer for your initial login. We have had some password issues if folks log in via their phones first. Do your initial account setup only on a computer, please.

Fig. 2: Fill out your profile.

When you login, follow the prompts (see Fig. 1) for a 10-minute introduction by @discobot about how the forum software works. This tutorial is important and fun, so please take your time and pay attention. You might even get some prizes!

note: You might also want to have a look at “Understanding Discourse For New Users.”

Once you finish it, select your Preferences to upload a photo and fill out your profile (see Fig. 2).[2] You might consider allowing your browser to give you notifications about posts that are relevant to you. You can manage these under Notifications.

Each class will have a specific category under which they will post their discussions, like World Literature or Writing for Digital Media. When I create your account, I will add you to the correct group or category for your class. Be sure you select to correct class when registering to avoid any problems. These groups are locked for privacy, so only our classmates can see what we post. Please see your syllabus for further instructions about what, how,[3] and when to post.

Before posting, please read Writing Standards FAQ and best practices for an overview about how to write on the forum.[4]
