Jerry, I have to commend you first of all for coming to this realization. The tone left at the end of your email seemed to be one of discouragment and desperation. Luckily, you are on the right track to becoming more like the person you orginally wanted to be. Secondily, I want to remind you that we ALL find ourselves in this position from time to time (as we all have our own rymthms)and have to re-evalutate our situations. I like you, I have since I met you. I look up to you because of your intelligence. But I also have felt frustrated at times with you, as possibly you have with me. I believe you hit the nail on the head with you titled your article 'Patience'. Because this is what it takes, and this is what I believe all great men and women have in common. You can be your own worst enemy or your best friend. I am glad you have been enlighted and I really look forward to hanging out with the new Jerry soon.
Love, Stefanie

I hope this won't get blocked, and I will save my response to your response to my response for another time.

Yes, Dr. Lucas, you are that pretentious, elitist, self-aggrandizing. You tend to be a completely smug asshole who seems to believe he has a complete grasp on everything. Some people would not want to spend more than a few minutes in a room with you.

Jerry, you are also an inquisative person with a real love of and thirst for knowledge. You have worked your ass off to obtain the laurels of your profession and do your profession for that love of knowledge and to share it. You treat your classroom and the ideas in as the most important in the world because you truly believe that for the one hour you are there, those ideas are. When pushed, you freely admit you know very little in the grand scheme of things and your discussions are an attempt to connect with others and share the quest for answers or more questions.

You do smile. I have seen it millions of times. It's a friggin' great smile. You just don't know when you do because your smile is very unselfconsciouse. You also laugh. You also love people and you cats.

I cannot judge your professorial skills as I have not sat in your class, but from your materials and our discussions, I think you are THAT professor. The one that many really hate because he expects work and thought, but that many who come to him/her with a desire to learn or are spurred on to learning by his/her acts find to be their favorite professor.

By the way, you are also still young and still have a lot to learn about your profession. You are only a greenpea professor, with a mere few years of experience. Take advantage of your moments of self doubt to grow. You don't always need kid gloves, but it helps (and I believe I am paraphrasing from To Kill a Mockingbird") to walk a mile in a mans shoes (or students). Sounds like you have a great learning/growth experience ahead of you.

BTW, I really love both Dr. Lucas and Jerry. Embrace both!

-Kip

Jerk :-)

Now don't go blaming me for inspiring all this deep thought - that aint' my gig buddy! I really enjoyed yelling at each other over drinks the other night and I hope to do it much more, so don't you go getting too soft on me!

On the other hand - I think I have very similar concerns, and I am glad that I don't have to watch myself "in action" because I would be afraid to hear my own tone or see my own face. If you think about it, how many people actually have the balls to videotape themselves doin their job, not to mention evaluate & edit it??

The fact that you think about these things seperates you from the masses, and that fact that you share them on the web and open yourself up for critisizim sets you apart even more.

... and that is about as sappy as I am willing to get right now :-) Maybe we should tape our next night of drinking.
