Reflection allows you to identify what you did well, what you struggled with, and how you can improve for future writing projects.

Here are some steps you can take to reflect on your writing:

  • Re-read your work: Before you can reflect on your writing, you need to read what you’ve written. Take the time to read through your essay or personal statement, paying attention to what you’ve written and how you’ve written it. Remember: if you don’t want to read your own work, no one else will either.

Exercise: Midterm Reflection
  1. Set aside some uninterrupted time to reflect on your writing journey so far this semester.
  2. Begin by reviewing your writing assignments, including essays, research papers, and any other written assignments.
  3. Write down a list of the major writing skills you have learned and practiced so far, such as brainstorming, outlining, thesis statements, close reading, integrating sources, and revising.
