My radioactive Japanese M42-mount lens. | My copy of the radioactive Japanese M42-mount lens was a Goodwill find for $25. It turned out to be a pleasant surprise: in decent shape, sharp, and with a creamy bokeh—all that I had read about. The glass was a bit yellow from the Thorium decay, but that gave the images a warmth I grew to really like. For anyone getting into vintage lenses, this is an excellent one to begin your Takumar obsession, uh, collection. | ||

Asahi Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 50mm f/1.4 M42
My copy of the radioactive Japanese M42-mount lens was a Goodwill find for $25. It turned out to be a pleasant surprise: in decent shape, sharp, and with a creamy bokeh—all that I had read about. The glass was a bit yellow from the Thorium decay, but that gave the images a warmth I grew to really like. For anyone getting into vintage lenses, this is an excellent one to begin your Takumar obsession, uh, collection.
