Bricks, Trim, and Deck

Home improvements are the best.

Major progress on the sound shed! We now have completed brick, and Robert and I installed the trim yesterday. And today, we tore out the rotting parts of the deck and replaced them.

While it might not seem tough, these jobs had me working. My job was to nail in the trim as Robert cut it. He did offer to let me cut, but since I’m lesser than an amateur—a real n00b when it comes to this kind of thing—and I knew that I would make mistakes, I figured I would do less damage wielding the hammer. I was kind of right; I did make a few neophyte mistakes.

What is it about swinging a hammer that is so hard? Or maybe it’s the fact that I’m in my mid-fifties? Or maybe it’s because I didn’t eat a proper lunch? Whatever it was, I was worn out like a set of old tires. The deck wasn’t as bad, fortunately.

I’m getting ahead of myself a bit. The brick was finished a couple of days ago, and I think it looks pretty awesome. I enjoyed watching the masons ply their trade over about three days. They were real pros—working quickly and efficiently, even in a couple of downpours.

Acoustic treatments for the north wall—the wall behind the audio system—will be delivered this coming week, and we will be putting some tongue-and-groove wood on the south face of the addition. Robert and I will be installing both of these. We have paint, AC, and soffits to go. I also have to decide if I want to acid stain the concrete. I do, but I’m not sure I’m up for doing it by myself. Yes, I think I can do it, but I don’t want to purchase the equipment for a one-time use. I’m thinking about hiring someone to do it, but I’ll have to decide soon.

We’re real close now.
