Relief is provided by the narrative’s beginning, middle, and an end. (The Spooky Art, 156-157). This order thing is fascinating: my art in MR 3.1 on NM & TSE looked at this some. I love my country, and European life has its own challenges (as you note), but Europeans have an approach to quality of life that is hard to replicate over here.
