I know I’m a few days late for New Year’s resolutions, but the spring semester beginning tomorrow seems more like a point of a new beginning than an arbitrary day on a calendar. So, with that, I propose the following.

The Subversive Education
Real education is subversive. It’s about nuance and irony — the challenging of the status quo. This is what I do.
Time to Eat
I remember my kindergarten teacher telling me one time: “you are what you eat.” Like other five-year-olds, I’m not sure I understood the figurative significance of this statement, but it is one of the first moments of contemplation in my life.
Exercise and Life
Exercise is like anything else in life that’s important: it must be practiced regularly and deliberately. It needs to be fostered in children from a young age if it’s going to have a life-long impact. To see how necessary this is, just look around you.
Be Nice to People, You Jerk
I don’t think I’m crazy, but I occasionally do crazy things. Fortunately, I’m no Raskonikov. (If you’re unsure what I’m talking about, watch an episode of Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm. He does poshlost well. You can see some of this in the Michael Scott character in The Office, too.)
I’ve Got My Philosophy
I have always resisted labels. I have chosen to be an iconoclast for most of my adult life. Labels allow you to be easily judged, unceremoniously dismissed, or thoughtlessly respected.
