I installed a <a href="http://www.entropy.ch/software/macosx/php/?phpinfo-version=5.2.5-6" rel="nofollow">pre-compiled version of PHP 5</a> (thanks to Mark Liyanage), upgraded Leopard Server to Apache 2.2, and somehow managed to load the right extension in the GUI. Cool, but still much more difficult than it should have been. OK, I did get this taken care of.
